LIFESTREAM,
INC. PARTNERS WITH PROJECT VISION IN $500,000 GRANT
August
2008
LifeStream,
Inc. announced its partnership with several non-profit providers of
the Department of Mental Retardation services in Region Five and public
educational institutions led by Bristol Community College to implement
the Professional Advancement in The Healthcare and Human Services Sector
(PATHHS) Project. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced the
$500,000 grant during a cabinet meeting in New Bedford.
The
goal of the PATHHS program is to strengthen the human services and health
care workforce in the Southcoast region of the Commonwealth. The PATHHS
Project is funded by the Commonwealth Corporation's Workforce Competitiveness
Trust Fund to prepare job seekers with the education and training necessary
to launch careers in health and human service occupations. The project
will also focus on providing incoming employees with education necessary
for career advancement. Most grant activities will earn college credit.
People
who rely on health and human service support include people with routine
and acute health care needs, individuals with disabilities, fragile
elders, people with behavioral health needs, youth at risk, and other
disadvantaged populations. The need for well-trained professionals in
this field is growing. PATHHS will use evidence-based workforce development
interventions that will increase the pool of potential professionals
and improve on-the-job skills to fill high demand roles in nursing,
direct support supervision and other roles.
For
its contribution to the grant, LifeStream will provide career exposure
and basic training to young adults, get referrals of pre-screened candidates
for open positions in New Bedford and Fall River, plus help adults access
English reading and writing courses. LifeStream employees will also
have access to courses at the community college that will provide opportunities
to advance in the field. Participants will be eligible to receive 9
college credits for successful completion of various program components
and these credits align with certificate and associate programs at Bristol
Community College.
