Congratulations to the two 2008 Sandra M. Cabral Nursing Scholarship recipients:

• Nicole DeMelo is originally from New Bedford and is a nursing student at UMass Dartmouth
• Kerri Pepka is from Attleboro and is a nursing student at UMass Dartmouth

Each recipient will receive $1500 towards their education. All applicants will receive a letter regarding their application within the next few days. Read the press release.

Background and Purpose:

The Sandra M. Cabral Nursing Scholarship was established in April 2000 for Sandra Cabral, a former Nursing Coordinator at LifeStream. In her lifetimes, Cabral made significant contributions to the quality of life for community members with disabilities. The purpose of the scholarship is to enhance the quality of medical support available to people with disabilities living in community settings throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. The $1,500 scholarship is awarded to one student annually.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Students must be pursuing a Registered Nurse (R.N.) Degree
  

• Students must be attending a local college or university

• Students must have an affiliation with the developmentally disabled population through community service, paid employment, volunteer work, family involvement, or otherwise demonstrate a firm commitment to working with people with disabilities in community based settings

• Preference will be given to residents of the greater New Bedford area, including the towns of Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Gosnold, Marion, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Rochester, and Wareham

Award:

The name of the award recipient will be announced on or around October 1. Application must be made in writing to the address below.

In addition to the application form, which includes a statement of financial need, a 250 word essay is required that outlines the applicant's commitment to people with developmental disabilities and how the student intends to use their degree to enhance the quality of life for community members with disabilities after graduation.

*All applicants must submit an official transcript from their educational institution. Any application received without a transcript will be considered incomplete.
