Creating Opportunities for Success

Self-Advocacy Committee

LifeStream’s Self-Advocacy Committee is a group of participants from LifeStream’s Community and Family Support program that meets on a monthly basis to discuss day-to-day activities and issues, as well as broader initiatives related to individuals with disabilities. Formed in 2005, the initial objective was to provide program participants with the tools, experience, and voice to take more control over their lives and impact legislation. Their involvement has initiated change throughout LifeStream to better meet the needs of those served by the organization.

To help meet their overall goals and objectives, the Self-Advocacy Committee created “Step Into Our Shoes,” an orientation program to familiarize employees with services from the perspective of those served by the organization.

Members of the Self-Advocacy Committee meet with new employees throughout the year to provide a first-person perspective on LifeStream services, where improvements can be made, recommendations on program and service enhancements, as well as sensitivity issues for individuals with disabilities.

The Self-Advocacy Committee also meets monthly to discuss issues related to community safety skills and making healthy lifestyle choices. Each meeting also includes a training session based on areas of interest for the participants. Examples include recognizing the signs of heart attack and stroke, assertiveness and stress reduction.

In addition to the positive impact the Self-Advocacy Committee has had on the organization, the social benefits have also greatly improved the quality of life for its members. They develop an active social calendar including short day trips around the area, as well as longer visits to places such as Atlantic City, Disney World and cruises.
